Le F\u00e8vre is aware of Postel's bad reputation, but believes that the allegations of heresy are unfounded. He asks BAM if it would be appropriate to mention Postel\u2019s name in the Bible as an authority in Syriac. Finally L\u00e8 fevre thanks BAM for his positive assessment of the Sirico-Chaldaic dictionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COMMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The allusion to Guillermo Postel in a work that aims to stand as a bastion of the Catholic cause could not fail to be controversial. Guy Le F\u00e8vre, a disciple of Postel, was aware of this; and Plantin himself, who will have to face the economic repercussions, was also aware, as he openly expresses in a letter addressed to Guy Le F\u00e8vre. However, despite everything, his debt to the erudite orientalist was significant enough not to withhold him the deserved recognition. Especially since his name had been included alongside that of Genebrard and the other doctors of Paris who in March 1569 sent their criticism of the translation by Santes Pagnino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This letter was published and commented on by F. Secret in \u00abGuy Le F\u00e8vre de la Boderie repr\u00e9sentant de G. Postel \u00e0 la Polyglotte d\u2019Anvers\u00bb, <em>De Gulden Passer<\/em>, 44 (1966), 245-257. And although the letter is undated, an interesting problem arises with the dating, as F. Secret, following Rekers, makes the following assertion in the aforementioned article: \u00abLa lettre, sans date, se situe par la dedicace dat\u00e9e, elle, d\u2019Anvers 1571 calend. Julii\u00bb. However, after working directly with the manuscript, we found no traces of dating or noticeable signs of deterioration. To our surprise, and suspecting that Rekers and Secret had not worked directly with the original, but with the copy made by Max Rooses between 1897 and 1899, we compared that copy through microfilm, which confirmed that the document in question is not dated. Furthermore, we know that the fifth volume of the Polyglot, which includes Guy Le F\u00e8vre's preface, began to be printed in early July 1570, and was completed on February 9 of the following year. On the other hand, at the end of the letter, the French scholar refers to his project of elaborating an Arabic dictionary, which, as can be inferred from a letter from Plantin to Masius collected in CP, IV, 73-74, seems to indicate that he was already working on it around January 31, 1571. In summary, what we intend to show is that both internal and external references, none of them seem to support the date of July 1, 1571, which both Rekers and Secret maintain for this letter. For our part, and based on the aforementioned reasons, as well as the fact that on November 16, 1569, he had already sent BAM a sample of this preface, we believe that this letter was drafted between that same day in November 1569 and the first month of 1570. <em>CP<\/em>, IV, 73-74, parece que estaba ya trabajando en torno al 31 de enero de 1571.
