Jean de Brancion, a nobleman from Mechelen with a keen interest in plants. After Clusius returned from Spain in 1565, he lived for a year in Bruges with Charles de St. Odomarus. He later moved to Mechelen, where he benefited from Brancion’s hospitality, until Emperor Maximilian II invited him to Vienna in 1573.
