Álvarez de Toledo, Fadrique

Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo y Enríquez de Guzmán (1537-1583), fourth Duke of Alba, commander of the Spanish Crown's army in the Netherlands under his father, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo. He married three times, without producing any children. In 1566, a broken promise of marriage to Magdalena de Guzmán, a lady-in-waiting to the queen, led to his imprisonment in the Castle of La Mota, in Medina del Campo. In 1568, he was released to accompany his father in the Flanders War, but after their return to Spain in 1574, the old sentence was reinstated due to Fadrique's secret marriage to María de Toledo, daughter of García Álvarez de Toledo y Osorio, Marquis of Villafranca and Viceroy of Sicily, a cousin of the Duke of Alba. This new process led in 1579 to the imprisonment of Don Fadrique in the castle of La Mota and the exile of the Duke of Alba to Uceda. Cf. BNB, XV (1930-1932), cols. 387-388.
